While the Butler men’s basketball team returned every member of last year’s squad, they will also be adding three new faces to the 2009-10 roster. Andrew Smith, a 6-foot-11-inch freshman center from Indianapolis, will join redshirt freshmen Chase Stigall, a 6-foot-4-inch guard from New Castle, Ind., and Emerson Kampen, a 6-foot-9-inch center from Yorktown, Ind., as newcomers to this year’s team.

While redshirting last season, both Stigall and Kampen were able to practice with the team and learn head coach Brad Stevens’ system but could not appear in any games. Both players worked on sharpening their game and adjusting to the new team.

“I’ve worked a lot on building my strength and learning the system,” Stigall said.

The Indianapolis Star sports reporter and Butler University adjunct professor David Woods, who is preparing to cover his 10th season of Butler men’s basketball, is set to release his book, “The Butler Way: The Best of Butler Basketball,” in November.

“I had actually thought about writing a book about Butler basketball as long ago as 2001 when they were in the midst of a 13-0 start,” Woods said. “I always thought in terms of writing a book in terms of one single season of Butler basketball, but I never thought they had one season consequential enough to do a book on just that season.”

Last February, Woods said he committed to write a book instead about the highlights of Butler men’s basketball.

The end of last season was bittersweet for the women’s basketball team. They made a long overdue appearance in the postseason and then said goodbye to four seniors.

Lade Akande, Candyce Brown, Candace Jones and Tara Miller accomplished a lot in their four years. Collectively, they managed to score more than 3,000 points during their tenure at Butler.

Now, with a new season upon them and higher hopes for their postseason endeavors, the Bulldogs welcome four freshmen into their ranks.

The women’s basketball team began preparing for the upcoming season with scrimmages in Hinkle Fieldhouse over the weekend.

“Right now, our defense looks better than our offense,” coach Beth Couture said of the intra-team games. “But I’m okay with that; that’s a good thing. Defense is what wins championships.”
And championships are what they seek. At the end of the 2008-09 season, the Bulldogs made their first appearance in the postseason since 1998.

In round one of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), the team topped Duquesne (Pennsylvania) 59-58, but fell to Marquette (Wisconsin) a few days later in round two, 58-49. It was also the first time since the 1997-98 season that the Bulldogs made a lofty mark with 14 wins in the Horizon League. This season, Couture hopes to make a Bulldog return to the postseason through quality league play.

The Butler men’s basketball team got its first taste of the upcoming basketball season Saturday during a scrimmage that was open to the public. While the team is only in its second week of practices, the squad has been ranked as high as No. 11 in some national preseason polls and appeared very comfortable on the court.

Men's Scrimmage
Last year’s team, which finished the season with a 26-6 record (15-3 in the Horizon League) and finished fifth in the conference, marched all the way to the conference tournament championship before losing to Cleveland State. The Bulldogs’ strong regular-season play led them to an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

With everyone from last year’s squad returning, the team will start this season without as many question marks as last year when they only had one returning starter. Head coach Brad Stevens also added a new freshman center,

Andrew Smith, and will have two redshirt freshmen, Chase Stigall and Emerson Kampen, at his disposal.
