Staff Position Descriptions

Absolute Requirements: Attend weekly editorial board meetings, assist with production for the majority of Monday and Tuesday, assist with any production that occurs throughout the week online and have a positive attitude along with a good work ethic! All positions are paid positions.

 

Editor in Chief: As the leader of The Collegian and Collegian Online staff, he/she will provide guidance to all staff members and make command decisions regarding content, ethical issues and staff matters, including hiring and firing. The Editor in Chief, as the backbone of the paper, should have prior experience on The Collegian and Collegian Online staff and show leadership potential. All final content must be run by the EIC.

 

Print Managing Editor: As the right arm of the Editor in Chief on the print side, the Print Managing Editor should focus on the internal print operations of The Collegian, assisting with issues relating to content, ethics and staff but also helping with online content to a certain degree. The Print Managing Editor will work with younger staff members to ensure the paper is running smoothly on a daily basis. The Print Managing Editor must also see all aspects of the print version of The Collegian on Mondays and Tuesdays and is the second-to-last person (to the Editor in Chief) to verify all final content before it goes to print Wednesday.

 

Online Managing Editor: As the right arm of the Editor in Chief on the online side, the Online Managing Editor should focus on the internal online operations of the Collegian Online, assisting with issues relating to content, ethics and staff. The Online Managing Editor will work with younger staff members to ensure the online content is running smoothly on a daily basis and making sure the Web site is up-to-date throughout the week. The Online Managing Editor must also see all aspects of the online version of The Collegian during the week and is the second-to-last person (to the Editor in Chief) to verify all final content before it is published on the Web site.

 

News Editor: The News Editors must have a strong sense of what is newsworthy and should be able to handle finding story ideas, assigning articles and requesting photographs, doing preliminary editing and supervising two assistant editors. He/She will also be expected to design his/her section’s pages, including The Collegian’s front page, and should be prepared to write at least one story each week. The News Editors will also be expected to monitor all online News content and update it as needed. Finding larger trend or investigative pieces is also a large component of this position.

 

Assistant News Editor: As an assistant to the News Editors, he/she will work to find story ideas, assign articles and edit stories as they are submitted. The Assistant News Editors will also help in layout and design and should be prepared to write stories weekly. He/she will also help in the transition of all print News content onto the Web site and will help publish and write stories online as needed.

 

News Staff Writer: This is a paid position intended for a strong writer who has an interest in news. He/She will be one of the primary writers for the news section and will be expected to write at least one but preferably two stories for each issue, adhering to proper AP Style and Collegian style.

 

Opinion Editor: He/She will be in charge of the opinion section of The Collegian and Collegian Online, which includes the staff editorial, student and faculty columns, cartoons, Paw Prints and all letters to the editor. The Opinion Editor must exhibit strong ethical values and must be able to write the staff editorial or a column on a weekly basis.

 

Assistant Opinion Editor: As an assistant to the Opinion Editor, he/she will assist in the writing of columns and/or staff editorials and managing the design of an Opinion page in the Collegian. Strong ethical values and good writing skills are also musts.

 

Arts & Entertainment Editor: He/She will determine the content for the A&E section, assign articles and request photographs, and edit stories when they are submitted, control the online content and supervise assistant editors. This position will require designing and writing every week. The A&E Editor is also responsible for ensuring that his/her section includes a mix of both entertainment and feature articles each week and that the Collegian Online stays up-to-date.

 

Assistant Arts & Entertainment Editor: As an assistant to the A&E Editor, he/she will work to find entertainment and feature story ideas, assign articles and edit stories when they are submitted. The Assistant A&E Editor will also help in layout and design and should be prepared to write stories on a regular basis.

 

Sports Editor: The Sports Editor will determine what athletic events are to be covered and then assign each article to a writer or one of the Assistant Sports Editors. The Sports Editor will also coordinate press passes for writers and send a photographer to attend each event. He/she will edit stories when they are submitted, lay out the pages of the sports section, control the online content and supervise the assistants. Additionally, weekly writing is required, and possible sports photography may be necessary. It is also up to the Sports Editor to ensure that all sporting events are updated as soon as possible via the Collegian Online and are written in more depth in the print Collegian.

 

Assistant Sports Editor: As an assistant to the Sports Editor, he/she will work to cover as many sporting events as possible, edit stories when they are submitted and help to design the look of the sports section, both in print and online. Weekly writing is required for print and/or online, and possible sports photography may be necessary.

 

Sports Staff Writer: This is a paid position intended for a strong writer who has an interest in sports. He/she will be the primary writer for the sports section and will be expected to write roughly two stories for each print issue and online every week.

 

Head Copy Editor: The correctness of the articles that appear in The Collegian and the Collegian Online in terms of both grammar, ethics and content is essential to the credibility of the publications. The Head Copy Editor is required to be in the office both Mondays and Tuesdays for the print newspaper, and he/she must also be available to read any breaking or regular stories that will be published on the Collegian Online Web site. An acute sense of detail and knowledge of AP Style are musts for the Head Copy Editor.

 

Copy Editor: Copy editors, like the Head Copy Editor, review pages for content, grammar, style and ethical issues and help to improve the overall readability of The Collegian and Collegian Online. Typically, one copy editor is available for Monday while another is available for Tuesday on the print side. Communication with the Head Copy Editor and other superior editors of when to copy edit streaming online content throughout the week. Knowledge of AP Style is highly recommended.

 

Photography Editor: The visual aspects of a print and online newspaper serve as a means of attracting readers and depicting meaning. The Photo Editor is in charge of taking or assigning all photographs that appear in The Collegian and the Collegian Online per the editors’ instructions and possibly supervising his/her assistant. Knowledge of digital photography equipment strongly recommended, but not required.

 

Assistant Photography Editor: As an assistant to the Photo Editor, he/she will work to take all photographs requested by the editors. Knowledge of digital photography equipment recommended, but not required.

 

Graphics Editor: The graphic elements of The Collegian are an important way to communicate statistics, ideas or general information to readers. The Graphics Editor will be responsible for creating a graphic to accompany the staff editorial each week, as well as helping section editors with graphical elements both in print and online as needed. Knowledge of Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator required.

 

Multimedia Editor: Multimedia aspects of any online publications attract viewers to the site and add to stories by creating a visual or audio aspect for readers when words are not enough. The Multimedia Editor is responsible for taking or assigning all videos, audio clips and podcasts that appear on the Collegian Online Web site per the editors’ instructions. The Multimedia Editor should play a key role in choosing what stories will have multimedia additions. He or she will also supervise the Assistant Multimedia Editor. Knowledge of digital video and audio equipment and software is required.

 

Design Editor: Design is essential to the visual appeal for a reader to a newspaper, print or online. The Design Editor is responsible for the “last look” at page layout before it is sent to the printer. He/she will check art formats, spacing, lining and the overall aesthetic of each page. Knowledge of page design and Quark operation are required.

 

Advertising Manager: Advertising plays a vital role in financially supporting a publication like The Collegian and the Collegian Online. The Advertising Managers will be expected to solicit ads, design ads and place ads on the pages of the paper and on the Web site. He/she must communicate with the editors regarding ad placement on a weekly basis. A good Advertising Manager will also confront a client if an ad does not comply with print or online ethical standards and should advise the Editor in Chief or Managing Editors if such ethical dilemmas occur. Money management and people skills are a must.

 

Circulation Manager: He/She is responsible for the circulation of the print Collegian on campus and through subscriptions. The Circulation Manager will keep an updated list of all subscribers and physically transport all issues of the paper to various spots around campus. He/she must be available Wednesday morning and afternoon to distribute and mail The Collegian.

 

Web Programmer: He/She is responsible for the overall design and layout of the Collegian Online Web site. He/She will oversee the work of the Assistant Web Programmer and assist with the design and maintenance of Web application development. He/She will also assist the entire staff with any technical issues involving the Web site, and will specifically assist the Multimedia Editor and Assistant Multimedia Editor with any videos, audio clips or podcasts.

 

Assistant Web Programmer: He/She is responsible for assisting the Web Programmer with any and all tasks related to the design, layout and upkeep of the Web site. He/She will also assist with the maintenance of Web application development and will be on hand to assist all other staff members with technical issues with the site, or additions or updates to the site.
